Quote for today...

From Msgr. Charles Pope in the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C. speaking on the need for the laity to assume greater responsibility for spreading the faith:
It is simple to say the priests should do something, but it is also a fact that shepherds don't have sheep; sheep have sheep.

  1. But, to play with the metaphor a bit further...I remember reading how preaching on Jesus as the Good Shepherd should never ascribe to the clergy the role of shepherd. The shepherd is on an entirely different, and superior, ontological plane from the sheep. The comparison for clergy in the sheep/shepherd metaphor is that clergy are like sheepdogs--on the same level as the sheep. The clergy are like the herding dogs--animals who run around in circles, barking and making lots of ineffectual noise.
